Friday, July 27, started the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, U.K.; I don’t know about you, but I have been glued to the TV and tuned in for results since then. More than ever this year for some reason, I actually want to watch more than just the gymnastics (which any girl who grew up in the 90’s and saw the 1996 Gymnastics would forever be hooked). In my running around town this week, it seems that I am not the only one hooked to the games, as I watch others viewing on the treadmill screens at the gym, checking the apps on their phones for results, or radio shows shouting out US victories on their broadcasts. And this got me thinking…What we all stand behind during these Olympic Games…Our Country, Our People, and Our Flag.
An interesting concept, that our country, The United States of America, is truly a brand. For all marketing purposes, U.S.A is marketed just as any other well-known brand would be. And what is our visual representation, our “Logo” if you will? Our Flag:
What has and always will stand for our brand (our country) is our flag. It is flown on every state capital building, it is flown outside more than 50% of private residences, it shows up on T-shirts, bumper stickers, caps, and coffee mugs, and it remains a constant and never-changing symbol to all who see it, US and Abroad. I would even wager to say that no logo within the country is more significant or widely recognized than our flag.
Just think, if we in our everyday lives, could stand behind our company brands as much as we stand behind our flag, our businesses would all be winning gold medals.
